Abstract

In Jade Seohyun Oh’s solo exhibition of paintings, Hanwul: The Rhythm of the Korean Contemporary, her work mobilizes the Korean spiritual concept of ‘hanwul’ (한울); a word from Donghak philosophy meaning the interconnected truest nature of the universe and ourselves, to illuminate how like the constant movement of subatomic particles the body is never static. Within her works Oh reaches into her diverse inspirations; Korean traditional philosophy, dance, music, and particle physics to reflect on her observations of a world constantly in transformation through perpetual movement. There is a focus on the rhythms and movements of the spontaneous moment of painting rather than the final resulting form on the canvas. Oh’s paintings are the records of constant movement like frames of a filmstrip. W. Gallery’s exhibition Hanwul: The Rhythm of the Korean Contemporary showcases Oh’s elucidation of the spaces in between steps, the quiet changes in the air, and the passage of time.
